What is Affiliate Marketing?

By Olga Bednarek

Affiliate marketing could be your ticket to extra money. Simply put, affiliate marketing is a way of selling items and/or services by using banners and other types of text advertising. Through use of these tools, it is a way for websites to share traffic. Merchants (the people who sell services and goods over the Internet) pay commission to website owners (Affiliates) for sending traffic to their site. Affiliates are paid commission when one of the following occurs:

Cost Per Sale: a visitor (referred by the Affiliate) to the merchant's site purchases items and/or services. This is also known as cost per acquisition (CPA).

Cost Per Lead (CPL): an Affiliate referred visitor completes some sort of form on the merchant's site.

Cost Per Click: Also known as CPC, someone visiting the affiliated website clicks on a merchant's banner and visits the merchant's website.

Cost Per 1000 Impressions (CPM): Merchants pay Affiliates a set rate to display 1000 of their advertisements or banners.
